New Caledonia – Noumea

Noumea port

Noumea is a main city in New Caledonia, and often known as the Paris of the South Pacific.

Large cruise ships (over 70,000 tonnes) generally dock at the industrial shipping port. You then catch a complimentary 5 minute shuttle bus to the smaller cruise ship terminal in the city centre.  Carnival Australia, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises usually dock at the industrial shipping port .

Most smaller shops only accept XPF South Pacific Francs (some will accept AUD or USD dollars). Most shops and restaurants take credit cards.

Ship tours –  one of the best tours is a visit to Amadee Island. This is a full day tour for just under AUD $200 per person. The tour involves a 45 minute catamaran ride to Amadee Island. Spend the day relaxing or you can enjoy the activities – glass bottom boat cruise, reef shark feeding cruise, climb the lighthouse, sarong tying demonstrations, coconut tree climbing. You can swim and snorkel right off the beach. Lunch is a French style buffet with BBQ meats, fresh salads, fish, cheeses, sweets & fresh fruits, all accompanied with French wines and non alcoholic drinks.

Noumea has a Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) bus service. This service is available from the smaller cruise ship terminal in the city centre. There are a number of tour operators offering day trips,  The HOHO bus costs AUD $20 per person to use the bus for a day to view the main city highlights.
